Meet Dr. Richard Akin
Rick Akin, DDS, MD
Richard T. Akin, D.D.S., M.D., earned both his Doctor of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Medicine from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
After graduating from LSU Medical School, he completed his surgical residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU and Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He is Board-Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
During his surgical residency at Charity Hospital, Dr. Akin spent six years of extensive training in the full scope of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery specialty, including face, jaw, and neck surgery; bone grafting; all aspects of facial trauma; and reconstruction of facial and jaw deformities.
He also has extensive experience in implant dentistry, including advanced bone grafting procedures for dental implant reconstruction. Additionally, his residency incorporated anesthesia training that qualifies him to perform various procedures utilizing intravenous sedation in both an office setting and a hospital environment.
His interest in furthering his expertise led him to spend some time in the Department of Anesthesia and Plastic and Facial Reconstructive Surgery of Israel’s Asof Harofe Medical Center.
He also received numerous Dental School honors, including the Dean’s Award for his pre-doctoral research in maxillofacial deformities, and represented LSU at one international and two national conferences. The recipient of an International Dental Research Grant, he was selected to visit and train for six weeks at the University of Freiburg Dental School in Germany.
Dr. Akin completed his undergraduate training and earned his Bachelor of Arts at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. A second-generation Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon born in New Orleans, he practiced with his father before coming to Baton Rouge in 2005.
Dr. Akin is an active member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Dental Association. He is licensed to practice in Louisiana and Mississippi and has Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery hospital privileges.
Because oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental implantology, and anesthesia are continually changing, Dr. Akin strongly believes that continuing education and employing technology responsibly are the keys to providing his patients with the best care. He lectures and attends continuing education numerous times per year.
He has published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Here are links to the implant technique he developed with his 2016 publication and the long-term follow-up article in 2021. He is currently working on two other research projects. Please ask him about this if it interests you.
He is proud to serve as a faculty member at the LD Pankey Institute, which promotes comprehensive, patient-centered care through lifelong learning, mentorship, and hands-on training for dentists and specialists. He is also a Key Opinion Leader for Innerview Technology.
He loves photography, music, gardening, dogs, and poetry, and is always seeking ways to be a better husband and father.
