Meet Dr. Richard Akin
Richard T. Akin, DDS, MD
Richard T. Akin, D.D.S., M.D., earned both his Doctor of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Medicine from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
Following his graduation from the LSU Medical School, he completed his surgical residency program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU and Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He is Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
During his surgical residency at Charity Hospital, Dr. Akin spent six years of extensive training in the full scope of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery specialty, including face, jaw and neck surgery; bone grafting; all aspects of facial trauma; reconstruction of facial and jaw deformities.
He also has extensive experience in implant dentistry, including advanced bone grafting procedures to aid in dental implant reconstruction. Additionally, his residency incorporated anesthesia training that qualifies him to perform a wide variety of procedures in both an office setting and a hospital environment.
His interest in furthering his expertise in facial cosmetic surgery led him to spend some of his residency at the Plastic and Facial Reconstructive Surgery Department of Israel’s Asof Harofe Medical Center.
Graduating second in his class at LSU Dental School in 1998, Dr. Akin was one of only three applicants — and the only one from Louisiana — accepted in the highly competitive LSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program.
He also received numerous Dental School honors, including the Dean’s Award for his pre-doctoral research in maxillofacial deformities, and had represented LSU at one international and two national conferences. The recipient of an International Dental Research Grant, he had been selected to visit and train for six weeks at the University of Freiberg in Germany.
Dr. Akin completed his undergraduate training and earned his Bachelor of Science at Providence College in Providence Rhode Island. A second generation Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who was born in New Orleans, he practiced with his father before coming to Baton Rouge in 2005.
Because the fields of oral /maxillofacial surgery, dental implantology, facial cosmetic surgery and anesthesia are continually changing, Dr. Akin strongly believes that continuing education and employing technology are the keys to providing his patients with the best quality of care. He thus attends lecture hours in excess of 100 per year, five times the amount necessary to fulfill the requirements of dental and medical continuing education.
Dr. Akin is an active member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Licensed to practice in Louisiana and Mississippi, he holds privileges for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery.
The only Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Baton Rouge to privately fund world class speakers to educate dentists in the most current techniques in his specialty, he also regularly lectures to the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association on such currently relevant topics as Dental Implantology, Bone Grafting, and current topics in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
